Cleveland-born Dorothy Dandridge was a trailblazing actress and singer who broke racial barriers in Hollywood.

Dorothy Dandridge was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and rose to become one of the most groundbreaking performers in American film history. Beginning her career as a child entertainer, she eventually moved to Hollywood, where she challenged racial limitations placed on Black actors. In 1954, Dandridge became the first Black woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Carmen Jones. Though her career was constrained by discrimination, her talent and presence redefined what was possible for Black performers in film and music. Cleveland remains her birthplace and the starting point of a legacy that continues to inspire artists and activists.
